Read on for your last chance to join a sea turtle research expedition to Baja California, learn about sea turtles and global warming, and help reduce carbon emissions.
Baja Turtle Monitoring Trips
Baja California Sur is a paradise for ocean wildlife. Nutrients upwelling from the ocean floor feeds small creatures that form the base of one of the world's most impressive food webs. Baja Expeditions and Earthwatch are offering opportunities in late October and early November to participate in hands-on research with scientists and local conservationists:
Baja Expeditions Camping Trip: Nov 3-10 ($1,795 per person)
Join SEE Turtles Co-Founder J. Nichols for a trip to the incomparable Magdalena Bay. Proceeds will help Hurricane Jimena recovery efforts.
Earthwatch Black Turtle Expedition: Oct 22-28 & Nov 5-11 ($2,550 per person)
Join a research project in Laguna San Ignacio with an international group of scientists and conservationists.
Sea Turtles & Global Warming
While most people (hopefully) know that rising temperatures will impact, few realize how the rapidly changing climate will affect wildlife. We have a new page detailing the already occurring impacts on sea turtles, which includes rising sea levels wiping out nesting beaches, coral bleaching affecting turtle habitat, and warming sand threatening hatchlings. Our blog has a detailed post on the current state of global warming news.
Action of the Month - Support Climate Legislation
Now that you know how global warming threatens sea turtles, give them a hand by showing your support for the landmark climate legislation just introduced in the Senate. The League of Conservation Voters has an easy way to contact your Senators here.
Next month, keep an eye out for a new school outreach program and a customized trip planner.
