MONDAY, JUNE 8th -Parismina
After breakfast, we will board our comfortable bus to head to the small Caribbean coastal village of Parismina. In Parismina, we will meet with members of Save the Turtles of Parismina who will introduce us to their community-based research and conservation program. Tonight, we will stay in simple cabins and spend our first night on the beach looking for nesting leatherback sea turtles.
TUESDAY, JUNE 9th – Parismina
In the morning, we will take a boat tour of the Tortuguero canals and look for wildlife including possibly monkeys, caimans, sloths, toucans, and other jungle creatures. The afternoon will be free to explore the town and surrounding rainforest. After dinner, we will visit a local club for a dance party with local kids. Tonight’s turtle patrol will be optional.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10th – Cahuita
After breakfast, we will drive to the South Caribbean town of Cahuita, a small town full of diverse cultures including Afro-Caribbean, indigenous Bri Bri, and many others. Arriving in time for a picnic lunch at one of the country’s most beautiful beaches in Cahuita National Park and digest our lunch in the warm Caribbean sun. Dinner will be on our own tonight, the town has many distinctive Caribbean restaurants to explore.
THURSDAY, JUNE 11th - Bri Bri Indigenous Reserve
We board our bus after breakfast and head into the Talamanca mountains to visit the Bri Bri Indigenous Reserve. EcoTeach is the only company authorized to visit this remote village and has helped to build a local school and health clinic. Our Bri Bri guides will take us on a fascinating tour of their cacao plantation and rainforest and share a traditional lunch. Upon our return to our hotel, we will enjoy a barbque and either relaxing by the pool or another turtle walk in Cahuita National Park.
FRIDAY, JUNE 12th - Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge
Today will be a busy day, as we drive to nearby Manzanillo, where guests will be able to choose from a variety of activities, including snorkeling, sea kayaking, a short hike into the rainforest, or just lounging on the beach. Then we will hop into a boat and explore the waters of the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, hopefully finding dolphins along the way to Gandoca. There, we will enjoy a traditional lunch and learn about the efforts of WIDECAST Latin America to protect one of the country’s most important leatherback beaches. Dinner will be at world famous Maxi’s Restaurant in Manzanillo.
SATURDAY, JUNE 13th – Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui
Before leaving town, we will visit the Kekoldi Indigenous Reserve. Here, we will learn about the efforts of the Bri Bri community to restore the local green iguana population. SUNDAY, JUNE 14th – San Jose
We will make the most of our last full day in Costa Rica, going whitewater rafting in the morning. Afterwards, we pack up our things and take the bus back to San Jose.
